Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a nod to the July Fourth holiday, County Parks and the USS Midway are joining forces to offer a free screening of the 2011 movie “Captain America: The First Avenger” on board the aircraft carrier flight deck July 3.

The film is one of many offered by County Parks and their sponsors for the Summer Movies in the Park series, the largest free movie event in the county.

This program runs through September and offers free movies outside under the stars at various parks throughout the county.

“This year, Summer Movies in the Park is featuring two films at the USS Midway Museum,” said County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Roberts. “These free screenings offer great family entertainment and also give visitors a chance to walk the same historic flight deck as thousands of sailors before them.”

The massive ship opens to movie-goers at 7 p.m.

They will get the chance to tour what’s known as the island, the superstructure above the flight deck. They can also check out the Captain’s and Admiral’s quarters and the ready rooms where pilots would once suit up and go over their flight plans.

On the flight deck itself, 25 aircraft are on display including an F/A-18 Hornet, an F-14 Tomcat Top Gun aircraft and various helicopters. Visitors can climb aboard a trainer aircraft called the T-2 Buckeye. Vendors will be on hand plus a bounce house for the kids.

Master of Ceremonies Brent Wilsey of Wilsey Asset Management will kick off the event at 8:15 p.m. and the movie will start about 8:30 p.m.

Parking at the museum costs $7.00 and street parking is free after 6 p.m.

So bring a blanket, some chairs, your favorite snacks and enjoy the show! For more information, visit http://www.summermoviesinthepark.com/
