A regional asset and local icon could soon be under a new management structure depending on the outcome of discussions between San Diego County and the governing body of the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted today to have the County’s Chief Administrative Officer begin discussions with the 22nd District Agricultural Association (DAA) about potential partnership options to manage the popular fairgrounds.

The proposal would bring more local control and transparency to the governing of the fairgrounds. Ownership would remain with the state.

The partnership would not be expected to create any financial burden for the County. The 22nd DAA is the most financially successful in California and has an annual budget of $90 million.

Besides the annual San Diego County Fair, Del Mar is home to thoroughbred racing and hundreds of special events each year. It has also served as an emergency shelter for county residents during wildfires.

The results of the discussions would be brought back to the Board of Supervisors in two months for any potential action.
