Beyond Rosie the Riveter: the Women of WWIIVIEW MORE EVENTS
When people think of the women of World War II, Rosie the Riveter often comes to mind. However, it’s sometimes forgotten that well over a quarter of a million women joined the United States’ armed forces during World War II. Jeffrey and Jeanne Suchanek, authors of Star-Spangled Hearts: American Women Veterans of World War II, will be speaking and signing books at the Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Dr, on Tuesday, August 7 at 6:30 p.m. Books will be available for sale and refreshments will be provided. Women veterans in the audience will be invited to sign a commemorative poster.
Based on first-hand interviews conducted with women veterans from all of the service branches, the Suchaneks present the memoirs of twenty women who collectively demonstrate that the honor of "Greatest Generation" does not belong to their male counterparts alone. Jeffrey S. Suchanek is an oral historian and the Senior Archivist in the University Libraries at the University of Kentucky and has a Master of Arts in American History from Youngstown State University. His wife, Jeanne Ontko Suchanek, also received a Master of Arts in American History and collaborated with him on Star-Spangled Hearts.
