School is out, summer is almost here and it’s time.
More than time to get out of the house, your normal routine, the job, escape it all and go camping! You can hit the trail, go star-gazing, munch on s’mores or just hang out and do nothing but sit in a lawn chair, listen to the birds twitter and enjoy the great outdoors.
Sound good? Well, you won’t even have to travel too far. County Parks and Recreation makes it easy with eight camping parks, six of which are open for the summer. They’re scattered throughout the region, so depending on the site, you can set up camp minutes from the ocean, in the mountain forests, or near a desert or a lake. You can rough it and pitch a tent, bring an R-V or stay in style in a sweet cabin.
Do you ride horses? Consider Sweetwater Summit in Bonita. Enjoy fishing? Visit Lake Morena in Campo or Guajome Regional Park in Oceanside. History? Yup, that too. Guajome has its historic Rancho Guajome Adobe. Want to bring a Scout troop or church youth group? Along with sweeping mountain views, Oakoasis Preserve in Lakeside offers youth group camping. Check them all out and see which camping park appeals to you most.
Fees range from $22 a night for a camp site to $100 a night for a cabin and everywhere in between depending on whether you need a full hook-up for your R-V for electricity, water and sewer, a partial hook-up for electricity and water only or non hook-up which means water is nearby.
