Incentives Approved for Landlords to Rent to Homeless Veterans

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In an effort to find more housing for homeless veterans, the Housing Authority of the County of San Diego Board of Commissioners approved the use of up to $400,000 for a landlord incentive program Wednesday.

Landlords who rent to homeless veterans can apply for a number of incentives: leasing bonuses, security deposit and utility assistance, damage claim reimbursements and more.

The program is designed to open doors for homeless veterans. The 2015 Homeless Point-in-Time Count showed 15 percent of the region’s homeless served in the military. Even those who have received Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers from the County’s Housing Authority struggle to find a place to live. More than 100 currently have vouchers but they are falling victim to historically low vacancy rates in the rental housing market.

Landlords who are interested in renting to homeless veterans participating in the VASH program can learn more by calling (858) 694-4808.
