Bully for You!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Don’t “bull-ieve” everything you’ve heard about pit bull dogs. They can be affectionate, charming pets. And October is the time to get one of your very own – for free.

This month is “Adopt a Shelter Dog Month” and the San Diego County Department of Animal Services (DAS) will waive the usual $69 adoption fee if you take home a pit bull or pit bull mix. DAS is partnering with the San Diego Humane Society and the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility to promote this “Dare to Bull-ieve” adoption event.

“While many people have a predetermined belief regarding the breed, pit bulls can be and, in fact, are very loyal and lovable pets,” said Dawn Danielson, Director of Animal Services.  “It is our hope that people will look past the stereotypes and come and visit our dogs and see for themselves, and then take one home.”

The County animal shelter on Gaines Street currently has 55 pit bull or pit bull mixes waiting to be claimed by their owner or adopted into a new forever family. The dogs adopted will have been spayed or neutered, and have received vaccinations, a microchip and a free health examination.  The adoptions are limited to one dog per household.  The County’s other two shelters will also honor the fee waiving for pits and pit mixes if the adopter mentions the event!

To kick things off, the Department of Animal Services will be participating in an event hosted by the San Diego Humane Society this Saturday, October 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 5480 Gaines Street, San Diego 92110.  A Bully Breed “beauty contest” will be held and numerous vendors will be on site.

All three County shelters are open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. The County shelters are located at 5480 Gaines St., San Diego; 2481 Palomar Airport Rd., Carlsbad; and 5821 Sweetwater Rd., Bonita.
