Seniors and kids got their first chance to work in and enjoy a new computer lab/senior lounge at the Spring Valley Community Center Wednesday when the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation and Cox Communications held an open house for the new “Cox Tech Center.”

The tech center is just the latest improvement the County has made to the community center, which it operates. The County opened a new preschool and play area in 2010 and spent $1.9 million to remodel the center and build the computer lab/lounge. The County also bought the center’s eight new computers, flat-screen TV and Blu-ray player. Cox Communications, meanwhile, in its partnership with the County, will provide free wireless Internet access and cable service for the center’s visitors.

“This is a shining example of how private business and government can team up to really help people,” said Supervisor Dianne Jacob, whose supervisorial district includes Spring Valley. “This lab will change the lives of people young and old as they learn new skills and enjoy themselves in the process.”

The Spring Valley Community Center provides a multitude of programs and services for residents, including recreation activities, senior programs, summer camp and the preschool classes.

The County Department of Parks and Recreation operates three community centers that offer programs tailored to the unincorporated communities of Fallbrook, Lakeside and Spring Valley.
