Curious kids who like to get beneath the surface will dig “Arch in the Park” at Los Peñaquitos Canyon Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 15.
The San Diego County Archaeological Society and San Diego County Parks and Recreation plan a day of education and fun to introduce young people to the field of archaeology. Kids can participate in an excavation, play archaeological games, talk to local archeologists and view the active archeological dig at the Los Peñasquitos Ranch House.
Families can tour the restored Ranch House, which was built as a one-room casa in 1824 and expanded to a luxurious estate by landowners in the 1860s.
Running Grunion, a local educator and Kumeaay Indian, will perform at Arch in the Park at 1 p.m. Demonstrations of Native American tool and basketmaking and storytelling will take place throughout the day.
Families can bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the shade, or purchase fry bread, sodas and other snacks.
Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve is the perfect setting for archaeological inspiration. For years, archaeological digs there have uncovered artifacts that fill out the picture of life for modern settlers and Native Americans in the canyon—which these days, is surrounded by well-developed suburbia.
Arch in the Park runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve Ranch House, 12020 Black Mountain Road, in San Diego.
