The County’s Edgemoor Skilled Nursing Facility offers long-term care for patients with complex medical needs and was just named one of the best in California.

Its commitment to help patients restore their human potential earned Edgemoor five stars from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, landing the facility on the 13th spot of the U.S. News and World Report list of Best Nursing Homes of 2012 in California. California has more than 1,200 nursing homes.

“Edgemoor making this very important list is further proof that the County is committed to providing quality care to seriously ill or injured adult patients with chronic disorders,” said Chairman Ron Roberts, County Board of Supervisors. “Congratulations to the doctors, nurses, therapists and other staff members for providing such compassion and great care.”

Established in 1923, Edgemoor initially served the needs of the poor and was a site for the treatment of tuberculosis, psychiatric disorders and polio patients.

In 2009, Edgemoor moved to a new-state-of the art facility with 192 patient beds. It also offers four recreational courtyards on a beautifully landscaped campus. Today, Edgemoor, which operates in conjunction with the San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital, serves adults with chronic disorders who are unable to be cared for in the private sector. Patients at the facility may have a multitude of ailments, including Huntington’s disease and AIDS, or may have experienced traumatic injury.

“We not only take care of patients’ physical needs but also look after their mental well-being,” said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. “Improving a patient’s health overall is a component of the County’s Live Well, San Diego! initiative.”

At Edgemoor patients receive 24-hour skilled nursing care, physical rehabilitation, as well as recreational, occupational, speech, and respiratory therapies.

“Each patient is assigned a personal physician who coordinates care throughout their stay at the facility,” said Walter Hekimian, Edgemoor Administrator. “One-third of our patients improve enough to be discharged to a lower level of care.”
