Reading Time: 2 minutes

Get ready to shake out that picnic blanket and dust off your favorite lawn chairs. For the sixth year in a row, County Parks and Recreation and sponsor cities are bringing back Summer Movies in the Park, the largest free movie event in the county.

Only this time around, the series is offering an additional 18 films and four new County park locations.

You can watch recent popular movies such as “Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Lorax” and “The Croods” or old classics like “Big” and “The Goonies.”

The films are all rated G to PG-13 and no matter where you live in the County, it’s very likely you can catch one at a giant screen near you.

New venues this year include Otay Lakes County Park, Pine Valley County Park, Rancho Guajome Adobe in Vista and Collier County Park in Ramona. Other locations range from Fallbrook and Oceanside to the north to Lakeside and Julian in the east, Chula Vista in the south, coastal areas like Point Loma, Mission Bay and Ocean Beach and dozens of communities in between.

The movie series starts Friday, but the kickoff weekend event will be Saturday, May 18 at Heritage Park in Old Town, where the popular Disney film “Brave” will cap off a free mental health celebration, sponsored by the County Health and Human Services Agency and commemorating May as Mental Health Month. The movie ties in with the celebration’s theme this year to “Be Brave: Stomp Out Stigma.”

Family activities start at 2 p.m. and the film begins at dusk.

The Summer Movies in the Park series runs through Sept. 21 and many locations offer arts and crafts, games and other fun activities for children an hour or so before the show starts.

So pack a picnic basket, grab the lawn chairs, blankets, jackets for the chilly night air, round up the kids and head out to a free movie under the stars. Summer Movies in the Park – it’s good family entertainment for the right price!
