Hundreds of Ways to be Healthy in 2015

Reading Time: 2 minutes

It’s the time of year when people make ambitious resolutions and many of them seem to focus on getting fit, losing weight or just living a more active lifestyle.

According to the website Statistic Brain, losing weight was the number one resolution made on Jan. 1, 2014. Sixty-two percent of Americans make a resolution at least occasionally. However, according to Forbes, only 8 percent of people achieve their New Year’s resolutions.

If you want to improve your odds of success, the County of San Diego has hundreds of activities throughout the year at a variety of skill and interest levels. Many of them are free or low-cost and they take place in locations all over the County.

The San Diego County Library has over 350 health and fitness events in January alone. The library has an online calendar of events that list all of them – searchable by location, date and/or age groups.

Yoga, dance classes, Zumba, nutrition and cooking classes, meditation and martial arts are just a few of the types of offerings at the library.

All library events are free.

San Diego County Parks and Recreation also have a wide range of activities for all ages. Hiking, sports leagues, equestrian opportunities, dance classes, yoga and fitness boot camps are all offered at various County parks or community centers.

The online Parks activity guides list all the locations, times and costs (if there are any) for all events.

One of the most popular Parks activities is hiking. There are miles of hiking, biking or equestrian trails in the 30 of the County’s parks and open space preserves. There are simple strolls along quiet streams for a leisurely hike while experienced hikers looking for a challenge can hike rugged mountains and isolated valleys.

San Diego County has one of the most diverse trail systems in the nation. Most of our trails are multi-use and have been designed to accommodate hikers, bikers, and equestrians.
