Mom, I’m bored… or How Free Outdoor Movies Save the Day

July 23, 2013 | 9:32am

It’s the middle of summer - are the kids driving you crazy yet? Never fear, County Parks knows how to entertain the tiny little monsters!

Summer Movies in the Park is only halfway through its season and has more than three dozen films to show before the giant inflatable screen goes dark on Sept. 21.

The kids can watch recent popular movies such as Hotel Transylvania, Wreck-It Ralph, Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted and The Croods. Best of all, the movies are free. The films are rated G to PG-13 and no matter where you live in the County, it’s very likely you can catch one at a park near you.

The shows start at dusk but if you get there early, the little ones can get their wiggles out running around the park and many locations are also offering arts and crafts, games and other fun activities for children an hour or so before the film begins. So stop counting the days until school starts and get in some late summer bonding time with the family. Pack a picnic, grab the lawn chairs, blankets, jackets for the chilly night air, oh and yes, the kids and head out to a free movie under the stars. School will start soon enough.

This is the sixth year in a row that County Parks and Recreation and local sponsor cities have offered Summer Movies in the Park, the largest free movie event in the county. This summer, the series offered an additional 18 films and four new County park locations. For information on the entire list of films, dates and locations, visit summermoviesinthepark.com.
