Need Some Bunny to Love? Hop Over to Animal Services

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The County shelters are brimming with bunnies and they’re all looking for love and affection, too.

If a dog or a kitten sounds like too much for your home, consider a rabbit. They’re quiet and not apt to run out the door every time you open it!

Animal Services has bunnies of all sizes, colors and ages right now. Adoption fees are only $25 for a single rabbit and a $35 for a bonded pair like Tickie Toes and Wynn shown above. The adoption fees include spaying or neutering, a microchip, a free veterinary exam, and a Rabbit Starter Care Package with fresh hay, pellets and a toy. A special promotion through the end of November includes a gift certificate for a litter box and a bag of Carefresh litter redeemable at the San Diego House Rabbit Society in Kearny Mesa.

“There’s no denying it, bunnies are cute and cuddly but if you’ve never owned one before do a little research,” said Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson. “Make sure a rabbit is right for you and your family.”

Danielson went on to say a hutch in the back yard is no place for bunnies. They belong inside the home where they can get plenty of attention and become part of the family. New owners must also ‘bunny proof’ their home to protect little Hoppy from chewing electrical wires and the like, much like dog and cat owners must pet-proof their homes.

Rabbits are available for adoption at all three of the County’s animal shelters. They are open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The facilities are located at 5480 Gaines St. in San Diego; 2481 Palomar Airport Rd. in Carlsbad; and 5821 Sweetwater Rd. in Bonita.
