What it’s about: When her native Virginia secedes from the Union and Richmond becomes the capital of the Confederacy, Unionist Elizabeth Van Lew is determined to defend the Union in any way possible. She begins by tending to the sick and wounded Union soldiers imprisoned in the infamous Libby Prison. While there, she devises methods of smuggling valuable messages out of the prison and into the hands of the Union Army. With help from the newly formed Richmond Underground, she is also able to assist prisoners escape to the North. This story of a true heroine of the Civil War is a great read for any lover of historical fiction.
