Sewage Spill Prompts Beach Closure Around Ladera Street

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A roughly 1,300-gallon sewage spill has resulted in the closure of a stretch of Sunset Cliffs, the San Diego County Environmental Health Department reported.

The spill started Tuesday morning with a blockage in the sewage system at the intersection of Ladera and Cordova streets and continued for about half an hour before City of San Diego crews were able to correct the problem.

The sewage flowed down Ladera St. and entered a storm drain at the corner of Sunset Cliffs Blvd. and Ladera St. The storm drain spilled approximately 465 gallons into the ocean just north of the stairway leading to the beach.  Signs warning of sewage-contaminated water have been posted at the stairway and north and south of the stairway.  Signs will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
