Dig out your mail ballot from that pile of bills and vote!
The special consolidated election for the 80th State Assembly District and San Diego City Council District No. 4 takes place Tuesday, May 21 and mail ballots must be received by the Registrar of Voters by 8 p.m. Tuesday in order to be counted.
That means ballots must be mailed out today or at the very latest tomorrow to ensure they are included in the first election night report. A Tuesday postmark is not acceptable.
If you vote-by-mail but won’t have time to send it or drop it off at the ROV before Election Day, take your mail ballot to any polling place in San Diego County or the ROV’s office by the 8 p.m. deadline on Election Day. If you’d rather go to your neighborhood polling place, check the back of your Sample Ballot and Voter Information Pamphlet for its location or use the polling place locator online and once you have the address, submit your mail ballot there.
So far, the ROV has received 21,000 out of 114,000 mail ballots that were sent to voters.
“Every mail ballot delivered before Tuesday can be scanned now, although no ballots are counted until after the polls close on Election Day,” said Registrar of Voters Michael Vu. “The mail ballots received on Election Day take longer to process and provisional ballots take even more time.”
Voters are being asked to choose who should fill the two remaining years in the terms for the two districts because the elected officials resigned their respective positions to take other posts.
Despite the new redistricting boundaries, State law requires the 2001-2010 district boundaries be used to fill the San Diego City Council District No. 4 vacancy because those voters elected the original candidate. Voters who have questions on whether they live within the former boundaries can check here. The updated redistricting boundaries will be in effect for the vacancy in the 80th State Assembly District. Approximately 230,000 registered voters will have the opportunity to vote in one or both of these elections.
