An estimated 300-gallon sewage spill has resulted in the closure of a stretch of beach in Del Mar.

Shortly before 2:00 p.m. October 20, a blockage in a sewer line caused a spill from a manhole in the 1300 block of Luneta Drive. It continued for about an hour before crews cleared the blockage.

All 300 gallons of sewage flowed into an adjacent storm drain that leads to the 15th Street storm drain system outfall. Signs warning of sewage contamination are posted 500 feet north and south of the 15th Street storm drain system outfall at Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. They will remain in place until samples confirm that water is safe for recreational use.
