“Eee-yah … you better believe it baby!” The San Diego County Board of Supervisors recognized local radio personality “Shotgun Tom” Kelly for his achievements in the broadcast industry with a proclamation.

Kelly, a San Diego native, now works in Los Angeles as an on-air host for the afternoon drive on K-Earth 101 FM and has worked in broadcast for nearly 40 years — including as a host for the County Television Network. See him here doing standups for a 30 minute show on rip currents in 1997.

Tuesday’s honor follows Kelly’s recent star installation in Hollywood.

“A love of radio, passion for music, and a bigger-than-life personality have earned “Shotgun Tom” the 2,496th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the category of radio. Huge accomplishment Tom, and congratulations for that,” said Supervisor Dianne Jacob. “I’m proud that you are an East County resident, also San Diego County and you never forget your roots.”

Wearing his trademark black hat, Kelly responded by saying, “You know, I may work in Hollywood and Los Angeles, but San Diego’s my home.”

“Thank you very kindly. I do appreciate getting this proclamation and I will hang it on my wall with pride,” he said.

Later, he spoke of his work in the San Diego community working with schools. He imagines he has been to every school in San Diego County helping out with fundraisers or Red Ribbon Week activities. He said he feels he has sustained his long career largely in part to his community ties.

Kelly previously has also worked at KGB, KCBQ and B-100, hosted the nationally syndicated television children’s game show “Words-A-Poppin,’” and “Kid’s Club.” Kelly has won multiple Emmy awards for his television hosting duties. Now, you may recognize his voice on “America’s Most Wanted” television show.
