County Collects 97% of Property Taxes

County residents who are late paying property taxes will soon get a reminder from the County.

San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Dan McAllister announced Monday that his office is mailing out nearly 50,000 notices to the 3 percent of county residents who still owe taxes this fiscal year. A 10 percent late fee and a $10 cost redemption fee will be added.

In all, the property owners now owe the County more than $121 million.

Yet, that’s just a small percentage of what was due this year. The County has already collected 97 percent of the property taxes owed it this fiscal year, a figure McAllister called “stellar.”

“At a 97 percent collection rate, we have one of the highest in the state,” McAllister said. “I hope that the 3 percent step up and pay before the deadline.”

Property owners have until the end of the fiscal year to pay before an additional, 1.5 percent monthly penalty takes effect. Because June 30 falls on a weekend, the new deadline is Monday, July 2.

McAllister said the state does not mandate that the County send reminder notices, but that the County sends them to help inform taxpayers of the additional charges.

Property owners who have requested reassessments still must pay the dollar amount reflected on their tax bill statements. If a property’s value drops as a result of a reassessment, the County will issue a refund.
