Contamination signs are posted at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas after a 6,200-gallon sewage spill.
The spill was caused by blockage in a manhole at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Vulcan Street. It was reported late Sunday morning and continued for a little over an hour until City of Encinitas crews removed the blockage.
Sewage flowed from the blocked manhole and into a storm drain that leads to Moonlight Beach. Signs warn swimmers and surfers to stay out of the water because of the contamination. They will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.
