Updated Dec. 9, 2014: The Department of Environmental Health has lifted the water contact closure for the ocean shoreline at the Silver Strand State Beach, Imperial Beach and down to the south end of Seacoast Drive. Recent water quality testing conducted by DEH confirms that Tijuana River flows are no longer impacting these beaches.
Even though the rain has subsided, visitors to South County beaches should stay out of the water. Recent heavy rains have sent sewage-contaminated runoff into the area.
The County Department of Environmental Health Thursday expanded the existing water contact closure north to Silver Strand State Beach. That followed earlier closures for the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Imperial Beach shorelines.
Sewage-contaminated runoff from the Tijuana River continues to flow into the Tijuana Estuary and beyond. Signs warning of sewage contaminated waters will remain in place until field measurements indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use, including swimming, surfing and diving.
