Beach Closure Expanded to Silver Strand

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A water contact closure has been expanded northward again to now include Silver Strand shoreline, the County’s Environmental Health Department advised Wednesday.

The closure earlier covered the area around the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Imperial Beach shorelines.

Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary as a result of this season’s rainfall and is still flowing.  Observations, confirmed with sample data, indicate northward moving ocean currents and contamination of ocean water at Silver Strand has been confirmed.

Signs warning of sewage contaminated water will remain in place until field measurements indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use.
