Except for one protective head cone and patchy shaved fur, the two puppies that survived a bee swarm attack on May 31 are nearly back to normal, and they’ve been sprung from the hospital.
Five-month-olds Buzz, a Chihuahua-mix, and Woody, a Jack Russell terrier mix, named after the Toy Story main characters, were stung so many times that they lost the ability to blink and had to be treated with ointments. Thursday, the puppies blinked on their own and no longer need the gooey medicine.
Veterinarians also removed the surgically-implanted drains at the wound sites that had become infected.
This was cause for playful celebration Thursday morning for the two puppies and it gave them the all-clear to leave the emergency veterinary hospital Friday and continue their recovery at the County Animal Services shelter in San Diego. Until they are fully healed, the puppies will continue to receive veterinary care from shelter staff such as the soothing baths to deal with the itchy bee sting scabs.
The puppies are not yet available for adoption.
Buzz is the one sporting the cone which serves two purposes: It keeps him from disturbing any healing sutures and it also allows him to receive signals from the Intergalactic Alliance.
For his part, Woody tells Buzz, “You’ve Got A Friend in Me.”
Buzz and Woody were among five puppies discovered tied to a tree directly under an active bee hive in Fallbrook. Two Jack Russell terriers, strangled trying to escape the swarm of bees. The third, a female rottweiler, escaped from her tether but was found dead several feet away.
Firefighters with CAL FIRE came upon the scene when they responded to a suspicious field fire in the 41200 block of De Luz Road. CAL FIRE is still investigating the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile Animal Services is asking for the public’s help for information on who tied the puppies to the tree and abandoned them. If you have information, please call (619) 767-2624.
