County Supervisors voted unanimously to appoint Supervisor Greg Cox to succeed Supervisor Ron Roberts as the Board’s chairman Tusday in the Board’s first meeting of the new year.

In addition to naming Cox as the Board chair for 2013, Board members appointed Supervisor Dianne Jacob as Vice Chairwoman and Supervisor Bill Horn as Chairman Pro Tem.

Roberts thanked the rest of the Board and all County employees for achieving a number of significant accomplishments during 2012.

Roberts said some of those accomplishments included: improving public safety, disaster preparedness and response capabilities; creating a soon-to-be deployed food grade-card system for food trucks; seeing the County library system honored as the “Library of the Year” by Library Journal Magazine; improving Cal Fresh food-stamp services; continuing the County’s fight for improved health and against childhood obesity.

Roberts also noted that the County continued to start and complete important public capital improvement projects — while saving taxpayers billions of dollars in financing costs by paying cash — including the new County Operations Center and the County’s new Waterfront Park project.

“It was everybody pulling together,” Roberts said. “I don’t have to tell anybody these are difficult times. The state has been embroiled in a financial nightmare, the federal government takes us to a cliff, and the County continues to do things.”

Cox said he planned to outline new goals for the County when he delivers his State of the County address, which is scheduled to be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13 aboard the USS Midway Museum in downtown San Diego.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors traditionally rotates the chairman’s position annually among the five supervisors.

In addition to outlining the County’s goals for the coming year in the annual State of the County address, the chairman becomes the official voice of the Board, presides over its meetings, appoints other Supervisors to various committees, and fields requests from the other supervisors to place items on the Board’s agenda.
