Volunteers, community partners and the public joined together to help those impacted by the devastating Jan. 22 storm during a “Day of Service.”

Chairwoman Nora Vargas partnered with local community groups to collect much-needed donations at four locations across the county.

Volunteers from the groups and County reported to the Jackie Robinson YMCA, Sherman Heights Community Center, National City Family Resource Center and the County Local Assistance Center at the Spring Valley County Library to help those in need by collecting donations from the public, putting together food kits for flood survivors and filling sandbags.

The community groups that participated in the Day of Service with the County include Pillars of the Community; the Jackie Robinson YMCA; The Positive Movement Foundation; the Hip Hop Health and Wellness 5K and Festival; the Harvey Family Foundation; the Urban Collaborative Project; the Emo Brown Foundation; the Sherman Heights Community Center; and Exhaling Justice.

Donation drop-offs of new and unused items like cleaning equipment, clothing and personal hygiene supplies will continue at Jackie Robinson YMCA during the following hours: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to the Day of Service, people can also support rain and flood victims by making financial donations to the flood response fund that the County and San Diego Foundation created. The fund has already received more than $550,000. The foundation will match all donations up to $100,000.

With people still recovering from last week’s rains and floods, weather officials are predicting potentially heavy rains starting Thursday. County officials are urging the public to be safe.
