February is for Families at the County Library

February is for families at your favorite San Diego County Library branch.

In conjunction with several community partners, the library is offering classes on everything from growth and development to positive parenting to emotional health and child behavior. Several sessions are available in Spanish, Arabic or both Spanish and English.

Many classes are taught in series and it is encouraged that you attend each week, but not required. Here is a schedule and brief description of what’s available for parents:

PARENTING WORKSHOPS

Santee Library, 9225 Carlton Hills Blvd, #17. Sessions are from 6 to 7 p.m. for parents of preschool and school age children including health and development (Feb. 9), family and social emotional development (Feb 16) and community and parents as advocates (Feb. 23). Presented by San Diego State University’s Child and Family Development Department. Childcare will be provided.

El Cajon Library, 201 East Douglas. Learn how to foster your child’s growth and development for parents of children age 0-5. Workshops feature free childcare, raffle prizes and a certificate of completion. The workshop is available in Spanish on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. through March 21 and in Arabic from 10 to 11 a.m. Fridays through March 23. PARENTING CLASSES

Vista Library, 700 Eucalyptus Avenue. This class is for Spanish-speaking parents of preschool age children. Wednesday Feb. 8 and 22, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Provided by Vista Community Clinic.

Lemon Grove Library, 8073 Broadway. This class is for parents of 0-5 year-old and school-age children and is in both Spanish and English. Thursdays in February from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Provided by Motiva.

STEPS TO UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD’S BEHAVIOR

Spring Valley Library, 836 Kempton Street. This series of classes offers helpful tools and strategies for parents of children 0-5. The classes focus on children’s behavior and how children develop socially and emotionally. Topics include temperament, attachment, positive behaviors, self-esteem, communication and discipline techniques. Fridays February 10; March 2, 9 and 23; and April 6, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Presented in English and Spanish by First 5 San Diego.

EMOTIONAL HEALTH AND YOUR FAMILY

Imperial Beach Library, 810 Imperial Beach Blvd. For all ages, teens and students. In Spanish. Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

BABY SIGN LANGUAGE BASICS

Santee Library, 9225 Carlton Hills Blvd, #17. Learn sign language basics for your baby. For ages 0-6 months old. Saturday, Feb. 11, 10:30 a.m.
