An iPad Mini. An Apple TV. Membership with Car2Go. One of these or many other prizes can be yours by simply recruiting your friends to take the County’s Housing Matters Facebook quiz. And if your friends take the quiz, you dramatically increase your chances of winning.

“We want people spread the word about Housing Matters,” said Piedad García, director of County Mental Health Services for Adults and Older Adults. “Our goal is to raise awareness about the link between mental illness and homelessness and how having a permanent place to live is the first step on the road to recovery from a mental health challenge.”

When you go into the Housing Matters Facebook page, you will be asked to take a short quiz before you can register to win.  When you register, Facebook will ask to access your account information so you get credit for recruiting people to the contest. Your information WILL NOT be used for any other purpose. Winners will be notified Monday, June 3. County employees and their relatives are not eligible for prizes.

Launched in 2010, the Housing Matters campaign aims to reduce the stigma often associated with mental illness and homelessness while raising awareness about the ongoing need and benefits of supportive housing.

Supportive housing is a community-based service model that provides housing along with support services such as mental health services, primary health care, and alcohol and drug services to homeless individuals with mental disorders.

Recently, social media pages were created to expand to expand the campaign’s reach, particularly to young people who seem to be largely unaware of what supportive housing is and how homeless people can benefit.

“By participating in the contest, people might be able to win some very cool prizes, but, most importantly, they will help to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness,” García said.
