Important Deadlines for Nov. 7 Poway Special Election

Poway voters interested in casting their ballots for the Nov. 7 Special Municipal Election on Measure A can begin early voting at the County Registrar of Voters office on Monday, Oct. 9. Measure A is a proposal to allow the development of 180 condominiums for residents over the age of 55 at the StoneRidge Country Club. Early voting will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. The Registrar’s office is located at 5600 Overland Ave. on the campus of the County Operations Center in Kearny Mesa.
The U.S. Postal Service will send out approximately 19,000 mail ballots on Monday and voters could find them in their mailboxes starting Tuesday. Voters who requested them are urged to act on them right away.
“If you know how you want to vote, grab that mail ballot when you get it, vote it and send it back in right away,” said Registrar Michael Vu. “The sooner we get the ballot back, the sooner we can start processing it so it will be counted right when the polls close at 8 p.m. on Nov. 7.”
Mail ballots are convenient for voters because they don’t have to make a special trip to the Registrar of Voters office to cast their ballots or wait for the polls to open on Election Day.
Here are two important deadlines that are approaching:
Monday, Oct. 23 – Deadline to register or change your registration
- Poway residents will need to register to vote in the Nov. 7 special election if they’re:
- Not currently registered
- Recently moved
- Recently changed their name
- Voters who aren’t sure about their registration status, can check it online. If you’re not registered or need to change your registration, you’ll need to fill out a new registration and you can find that form there, too. If your signature is confirmed through Department of Motor Vehicles records, it will automatically be sent to the Registrar of Voters office. If the signature is not confirmed, you can print the form, sign it and mail it to the Registrar.
- For voters without access to a computer, registration forms are also available at the Registrar’s office, post offices, public libraries, City Clerk offices and Department of Motor Vehicles offices.
- Registration forms must be postmarked or delivered to the Registrar by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23. Voters can also register online until midnight that same day.
Note: Individuals who miss this deadline now have the opportunity to register and vote their ballot only at the Registrar’s office.
Tuesday, Oct. 31 – Deadline to apply for mail ballot
There are several ways to apply:
- Complete the application on the back of the sample ballot and voter information pamphlet.
- Download an application from the Registrar of Voters’ website.
- Email, fax or mail a letter to the Registrar of Voters. The request must include your name, residence address, name and date of the election, the address where the ballot is to be mailed and your signature. If mailing your request, send it immediately.
- Applications and letters can be emailed to rovmail@sdcounty.ca.gov, faxed to (858) 694-2955 or mailed to the Registrar of Voters at P.O. Box 85520, San Diego, CA 92186-5520
- Call (858) 565-5800. The Registrar of Voters accepts mail ballot requests over the phone. The request can be only for the current election and the registered voter must personally make the call.
- The Registrar of Voters must physically receive applications no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
Registered voters who miss the mail ballot deadline can vote in person at the Registrar of Voters office during early voting hours or they can cast their ballot at their neighborhood polling place on Nov. 7.
Those who are already permanent vote-by-mail voters do not need to re-apply. Their ballots will be mailed automatically.
