TB Case Reported at Mid-City Campus

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A person at San Diego Continuing Education’s Mid-City Campus was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) and may have exposed students and staff, the County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) reported today.

HHSA is working closely with the San Diego Community College District to notify anyone who was potentially exposed. The period of potential exposure was from September 4 through November 4, 2013. Free testing for students who were potentially exposed will take place on January 14 at the school, which is located at 3792 Fairmont Avenue in San Diego.

“Tuberculosis usually requires many hours of close indoor contact to spread to others, and most people who are exposed do not develop the disease,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss.

“TB can be treated and cured with medication, so it’s important to identify those who have been exposed.”

Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the San Diego region. The case reported today was one of 184 cases confirmed for 2013. That number may increase as not all 2013 investigations have concluded yet. No cases have been reported in 2014. There were 234 cases of TB in San Diego in 2012.

For more information about the potential exposure, call the County of San Diego TB Program at (619) 692-8621.
