Take the First Step

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Have you been walking 10,000 steps every day?

That’s a realistic goal and a great first step towards heart health. Tomorrow is National Walking Day, and San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Roberts and Health and Human Services Agency Director Nick Macchione would like to encourage you to take a stroll through downtown San Diego.

“If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to begin a walking routine, tomorrow’s walk is a great opportunity to get out with others and get started,” said Roberts. “I’ve been walking and the other day I did more than 20,000 steps. But 10,000 is a good goal and one I encourage for most people.”

The walk, sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA), starts at the San Diego Concourse Plaza, 202 C Street at 12 noon. The activities also include free health screenings by the UC-San Diego Health System, CPR demonstrations, entertainment and giveaways.

“One of the key messages of our County’s Live Well, San Diego! 10-year initiative is empowering County residents to take action and responsibility for their own health,” said Macchione. “We want people to make healthy choices. Walking is a fun, easy way to get moving and a great pathway to better personal health.”

Brisk walking for 30 minutes a day has been proven to reduce your risk of a stroke, reduce cholesterol and lower your blood pressure, according to the AHA.
