Cardiff Library Addition Expands Space by 25 Percent

The community joined County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and Library Director José Aponte Thursday to celebrate the opening of the expanded Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library, which features a new children’s room and a shaded patio.

“The Cardiff Library expansion means more space for more of what the library does so well – circulating materials and serving the community with great programs,” Supervisor Slater-Price said.

The expansion adds about 25 percent more useable space to the library. There’s a flexible room for community programs, including after-hours events; an expanded children’s room; a redesigned teen space; a remodeled computer lab, lobby, and book stacks; and outside, a sun-shaded Poets Patio with a laptop bar surrounded by a demonstration garden of native plants.

Library technology includes wireless internet access—which reaches the patio—public internet computers; self-service printers, copiers and express check-out machines.

“Public libraries and the free enrichment services we offer are essential,” said Director Aponte. “This expansion project was designed to increase access to materials and programs that will inform, educate, inspire, and entertain the community of Cardiff. We have truly built the library of the future at a time when our customers need it the most.”

The opening festivities featured performances by harpist Mair Rathburn and kid-favorites Hullaballoo; an appearance by “Mary Poppins” and kids’ crafts. Manuel Oncina Architects and Harborside Construction worked on the expansion that started in September 2010. It was funded with $1,287,400 authorized by the Board of Supervisors.
