She is a strong believer that workers are more effective when they do more of what they do best.

Her commitment to inspire and promote excellence in others earned Pam Smith, Deputy Director of the County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), a “Leaders Leading Leaders” award from the Marcus Buckingham Company. She is one of 25 leaders from around the nation selected for the first annual award, which will be presented October 29 in Beverly Hills.

Marcus Buckingham is a best-selling author and a leader in the so-called “Strengths Revolution,” in management. Buckingham encourages managers to focus on developing their employees’ strengths, which   leads to improved productivity and customer satisfaction along with reduced employee turnover.

“This prestigious award validates Pam’s dedication to improving the quality of life of seniors in the region, as well as her commitment to developing excellence in employees,” said Chairman Ron Roberts, County Board of Supervisors.

A County employee since 1998, Smith is director of HHSA’s Aging and Independence Services and is the Regional General Manager for HHSA’s East and North Central regions. Smith oversees more than 30 different programs serving senior citizens, disabled adults, children and families. She supervises a staff of about 1,000 people.

“Pam is a dynamic and proven leader who is transforming and improving the lives of local residents by implementing the County’s vision of healthy, safe and thriving communities,” said Nick Macchione, Director of HHSA. “Pam believes in a fully-engaged workforce. Pam and her team are building a culture of innovation and success.”

“I am very surprised and honored. I’ve been a big fan and a proponent of Marcus Buckingham’s work and his strengths initiatives,” said Smith, who was featured in Buckingham’s book “Now, Discover Your Strengths.” “Marcus is well respected and does great work with a lot of companies. It’s nice to see the public sector represented and to earn recognition for all the good work going on in the County.”
