Fairy Godmothers, Proms and… Spring Cleaning?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What does spring cleaning have to do with the prom? Much less fairy godmothers?

The San Diego County Library is collecting gently-used formal gowns for teenage girls in need. So as you plow through your cluttered closet during spring cleaning, consider taking out those fancy dresses and donating them to a teenager who can’t afford her own gown.

While you think you may wear them again, think again. You’ve been there, done that. Wouldn’t you just as soon help another young girl wear the dress of her dreams, your dress, for her prom or any of the other high school formal dances? (You get to be a fairy godmother…)

The library is taking formal gowns less than five years old and in good condition. All sizes and styles are needed. You can take them to any County library between now and April 20. Last year, more than 200 teenage girls attended the giveaway events. The year before, we followed along as some teens chose the perfect gown.

“Many teenagers dream of going to high school formals but struggle to afford it,” said Library Director José Aponte. “The library is happy to help make those dreams come true and create lifelong memories for teens and their families.

The library’s annual Prom Dress Drive and Gown Giveaways are sponsored by the Princess Project. The non-profit organization acts as a fairy godmother to high school girls in need of dresses to wear to the big dance. They’ll match gowns with girls in grades 9-12.

Teenagers who are interested can sign up for the Gown Giveaway by calling the El Cajon library branch at (619) 588-3718, the Vista branch at (760) 643-5100 or by visiting the princessproject.org. The giveaway itself runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 20 at the Vista (700 Eucalyptus Ave.) and El Cajon (201 E Douglas Ave.) libraries.
