Food, Family and Fun at Santee Lakes

More than 200 foster children and their caregivers will participate in the County Health and Human Services Agency’s (HHSA) Foster Family Fun Day taking place Saturday at Santee Lakes.

More than 200 foster children and their caregivers will participate in the County Health and Human Services Agency’s (HHSA) Foster Family Fun Day taking place Saturday at Santee Lakes.

The six-hour event will be filled with fun activities for children to interact with their foster parents and other caregivers outside of their homes.

“This is a great opportunity to engage foster parents and to let them know we appreciate them for taking care of children while they are in foster care,” said Jessica Newmyer, Manager of Child Welfare Services for HHSA’s East Region. “This is our way of thanking them for what they do.”

Refreshments and food will be provided by the Kiwanis Club of Alpine, which is also covering the reduced $2.00 charge for all families attending the event.

“We’ve partnered with the Kiwanis Club since the event was established four years ago,” said Newmyer, adding that this event is part of HHSA’s Neighborhood for Kids, an innovative program that strives to keep abused and neglected children in their own neighborhoods and schools and which was recently recognized as a Bright Idea by Harvard University.

In addition to all of the fun activities and food, there will be booths to provide information about exercise, healthy eating and improving physical and mental health, a goal of the County’s Live Well, San Diego! initiative.

“We’re informing our foster families about improving the health and well-being of all residents in East Region and sharing some simple steps they can take to be healthier,” concluded Newmyer.
