Reading Time: < 1 minute

Pop some popcorn, grab a picnic blanket and round up the kids for an evening under the stars at the kickoff to Summer Movies in the Park.

The movie series billed as the largest free movie event in the county begins Friday, May 22 and just keeps getting bigger and better.

This year, the series will feature a whopping 120 movies, 31 more than last year. Four more County parks will be added to the list of locations; Felicita, Lake Morena, Live Oak and Flinn Springs Parks making for dozens of locations sprinkled through the region. They range from Fallbrook and Oceanside to the north to Campo and Julian in the east, Imperial Beach in the south, coastal areas like Point Loma, Mission Bay and Ocean Beach and dozens of communities in between.

This is the eighth year in a row that County Parks and Recreation and sponsor cities have coordinated the event. The films are all rated G to PG-13 and range from classics like “The Jungle Book,” “Mary Poppins” and “Back to the Future” to newer movies like “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and “The Lego Movie.”

The first two movies in the series will be shown on Friday with “Finding Nemo” at the Waterfront Park downtown and “Big Hero Six” at Robert Egger, Sr. – South Bay Community Park.

Movies start shortly after dusk but many locations offer arts and crafts, games and other fun activities for an hour or so beforehand. For the entire list of films, dates, locations and activities, visit Summer Movies in the Park.

The series runs through Sept. 26.
