Leap Into Marriage? Why Not?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Why not, indeed? That was the sentiment by some bridal couples who picked Leap Day as the perfect day to leap into marriage.

Dozens of brides and grooms said I do at the Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk’s offices at the County Administration Center downtown, in San Marcos and El Cajon.

Why not take the traditional approach and plan a day around the availability of the church or when Grandma can fly out to the ceremony? One couple met two months ago to the day and liked the idea of sealing their whirlwind courtship with a wedding on Leap Day. Michelle and Ryan Andrew plan to celebrate their anniversary every four years in a really big way rather than smaller celebrations every year. During a normal year, they’ll order pizza and clink wine glasses for an “almost-versary.”

Other couples said they plan to take a special anniversary trip every four years. One pair explained they are unique people and the date fit them and their personalities.

While tradition has it that women can ask for a man’s hand in marriage during a Leap Year, none of the bridal couples we met said that was the case. But then again, there’s always next Leap Year.
