Microchip Pets for Disaster Preparedness

Reading Time: < 1 minute

With wildfires nearly a constant threat in our county, the County Department of Animal Services is encouraging pet owners to make sure their disaster preparedness plans include microchipping.

Animal Services is offering microchipping, rabies vaccinations and dog licenses from noon to 2 p.m. this Sunday, May 20, at Woodglen Vista Park in Santee. The park is located at 10250 Woodglen Vista Drive and owners who take advantage of the services Sunday will receive free gifts.

“We have rescued hundreds of animals during past fires, and confirming identity and ownership is critical to reuniting lost animals with their owners,” said Dawn Danielson, County Animal Services director. “A microchip will remove any doubt about ownership and helps us reunite animals and their owners after a disaster. We encourage everyone with a dog or cat to be prepared before a disaster hits and take advantage of this offer. It could save your pet’s life!”

Animal Services will microchip pets for a one-time fee of $20, which includes the microchip registration. Rabies vaccinations for dogs (4 months or older) and cats (3 months or older) are $6. Amnesty from late fees is offered to owners who have failed to license their dog or have allowed their dog’s annual license to lapse. Spay and neuter coupons will also be available.

These services are available for residents who live in the unincorporated county or Animal Services contract cities: San Diego, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar and Santee.

To protect owners and their pets, dogs must be on a leash and cats in a carrier while visiting the clinic. For more information, contact the County Department of Animal Services at (619) 767-2675 or visit www.sddac.com.
