San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister announced today that his office began mailing out 1,771 property tax refunds.

Property sales over the last six to eight months have resulted in a large number of negative reassessments.  McAllister estimated the value of the current mailing at $1,190,439. The average property tax refund of this batch of refunds is estimated at $672.  The lowest is $10.04 dollars and highest, $91,935.

“Since the first of the year, we have mailed out 18,556 refunds with a value of $10,551,376.58,” stated McAllister.  “It is our goal to send these refunds out as soon as we are able.”

A negative supplemental assessment is generated by a decrease of the current value or other downward assessments.  A negative supplemental does not change the taxpayer’s responsibility to pay all other property tax bills.

If you think you may be owed a refund, please contact the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Refund Hotline at (619) 531-5813.
