A six-year initiative to improve the health of students in the Chula Vista Elementary School District has resulted in a significant drop in obesity rates.

Numbers released Monday show that compared to 2010, when the district first collected Body Mass Index data, the number of students in the obese category decreased by 17 percent. The number of students in the normal weight category had an increase of over 7 percent.

In the video of the announcement above, school officials explain what changes they credit with creating the positive trend.

The district was the first to become a partner with San Diego County on Live Well San Diego, a vision for healthy, safe and thriving communities.
