Possible TB Exposure Reported at a San Marcos Preschool

Reading Time: < 1 minute

An individual recently diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) may have exposed children and staff at Discovery Isle Child Development Center in San Marcos, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) reported today.

HHSA is working with preschool staff to notify those who were potentially exposed at the facility located at 308 South Twin Oaks Valley Road. The dates of possible exposure were March 11and 12, 2013.

Children and staff who may have been exposed are being referred to their primary care providers for follow-up.

“Public Health Services continually monitors community health issues, including TB, and is committed to safeguarding the public,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County Public Health Officer. “TB usually requires many hours of close, indoor contact to spread to others so most people who are exposed in classrooms do not get infected or develop the disease.”

When TB does occur, it can be treated and cured with medication. It is important to identify those who are infected so they can begin treatment and prevent the spread of the disease to others.

Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the San Diego region. In 2012, 234 cases were reported in the county. Twenty-two cases have been reported to date in 2013.
