The Vera Institute of Justice and the Office of Youth and Community Restoration awarded the San Diego County Probation Department a $125,000 grant. The grant is part of the Ending Girls’ Incarceration initiative. It will include technical assistance from the Vera Institute of Justice to help improve programming, collect data, and close policy gaps for girls and gender-expansive youth.
The initiative is a nationwide effort to address the race and gender inequities that fuel disparities and create pathways to incarceration for girls and gender-expansive youth of color. The Probation Department is committed to implementing equitable policies and gender-responsive programming to immediately reduce girls’ incarceration.
The nationwide efforts align with the County’s Comprehensive Strategy for Youth, Family and the Community and our collaborative efforts to build a system of care for at-risk youth and juvenile clients. This strategy is based on a foundation of services provided through a network of community-based organizations in conjunction with county departments, local law enforcement agencies and schools.
The Children’s Initiative and other community organization partners supported the department in securing this grant.
