County of San Diego Probation officers have a new training facility and its state-of-the-art simulation house is the first of its kind in California.

“Having our own [simulations] house is an asset to our department. It gives real life scenarios,” said Probation Officer Charles Thurman. “It’s basically a decision-making tool.”

The movable walls and doors mean that no two trainings are the same. This helps officers learn valuable techniques to de-escalate dangerous situations and better serve and protect the community.

“They’re able to formulate a plan and make a decision in a much quicker fashion,” said Probation Officer Rich Trachta.

Trachta also explained that the training facility combines the mat room, the simulator room and classrooms so that the officers have everything in one place to provide multiple trainings together.
