Sewage Spill Closes Section of Carlsbad State Beach

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A stretch of Carlsbad State Beach has closed after a sewage spill contaminated the water Tuesday, County Department of Environmental Health officials announced.

About 125 gallons of sewage spilled from the Encina Wastewater Authority treatment plant after a valve didn’t close properly during routine operations. The sewage entered Encina Creek, which flows to the beach.

The closure was issued for the Encina Creek access points and the Carlsbad beachline from 500 feet north to 500 feet south of the Encina Creek outlet. The signs will remain in place until samples confirm that water is no longer impacted.
