Visitors to Dog Beach in Ocean Beach and a portion of South Mission Beach are being warned to stay out of the water following a sewage spill, the San Diego County Environmental Health Department reports.

An estimated 22,500-gallon sewage spill was reported today by the City of San Diego Metropolitan Wastewater.  The spill entered the San Diego River near Interstate 15. Because it may affect the beaches at the river’s mouth, the beaches on either side have been closed. Signs warning of sewage contaminated water will remain in place until field measurements indicate the ocean water is safe for recreational use.
