VIDEO: Summer Meals for Kids Launches at Waterfront Park

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The County of San Diego, San Diego Unified School District and San Diego Hunger Coalition are teaming up to offer the Waterfront Park as the newest summer meal site for youth.

More than 125,000 lower-income children in San Diego County depend upon free or reduced-price meals during the school year. When school’s out for the summer, the summer meals program takes over to fill the nutrition gap. However, about 72 percent of children at risk of summer hunger in San Diego County do not participate in the program for a variety of reasons, such as lack of awareness or nearby sites. The summer meal program, funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, provides free, nutritious meals for children 18 years and younger during the summer months.
