Reading Time: < 1 minute

An individual at Hilltop Drive Elementary School was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) and may have exposed students and staff to the disease, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) reported today.

HHSA is working in close collaboration with the Chula Vista Elementary School District to notify students and staff who were possibly exposed. The period of exposure is August 30, 2011 to September 20, 2011.

“Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss,” says Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County Public Health Officer. “Most people who are exposed to TB do not develop the disease, but when it does occur, it can be treated and cured with medication; that’s why it’s important to identify those who have been exposed.”

Hilltop Drive Elementary School is offering students no-cost testing at the school on November 15, 2011. The school is located at 30 Murray Street in Chula Vista.

Individuals who would like more information may call Hilltop Drive Elementary School at (619) 422-8323 or the County TB Control Program at (619) 692-8621.

There have been 195 cases of TB reported in San Diego in 2011.
