An individual at the University of California, San Diego was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) and may have exposed students and staff, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) reported today.

HHSA is working with university officials to notify individuals who were potentially exposed to TB. The period of exposure was from July 27 to Oct. 10, 2013.

Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.

“Most people who are exposed to TB do not develop the disease, but when it does occur, it can be treated and cured with medication; that’s why it’s important to identify those who have been exposed,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.

Free testing for students, faculty and staff will be conducted at UC San Diego Student Health Services located at 9500 Gilman Drive #0938, La Jolla, CA beginning Nov. 4.

Tuberculosis in not uncommon in the San Diego region.  In 2012, 234 cases were reported in the county and 127 have been reported to date this year.
