Two disabled-friendly cabins will be installed at Potrero Regional Park bringing the total number of similar cabins to five in the County Parks system.
The County Board of Supervisors approved the donation of the two structures from Cabins by the Lake, Inc. during a meeting Wednesday.
The non-profit was founded by Mike Dunlap after he learned how a wheel-chair bound relative looked forward to camping at the one cabin built for accessibility in her Wisconsin State Park system every year. Dunlap created Cabins by the Lake and approached County Parks with a request to add handicap-friendly cabins locally so people with disabilities could also enjoy the outdoors. The non-profit’s ultimate goal is to provide one such cabin at all of the County’s eight campgrounds.
The first of the pre-fabricated cabins was installed at Guajome Regional Park in Oceanside in 2010. One year later, two new cabins were put in at Dos Picos Regional Park in Ramona. Since then, more than 500 reservations have been made for the three cabins.
The structures planned for Potrero Regional Park will be similar to those at Dos Picos. They’ll include heating, a ceiling fan, electrical outlets, a restroom, one double and three single beds, a living area and a porch. The cabins should be completed next summer.
