Child Support Adds Payment Option at 7-Eleven

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Helping parents provide for their children is the ultimate goal of the San Diego County Department of Child Support Services. In its latest effort to make the payment process more convenient, the department is now offering a new cash payment service at participating 7-Eleven stores.

The PayNearMe service is the second cash payment option offered this year to parents paying child support. In January, they were given the option of using the MoneyGram cash payment service available at various retail chain stores such as grocery stores and Walmart. Previously, parents could pay in cash only at county or regional local child support agency locations that accepted in-office payments. Those who stand to benefit the most from the cash payment services are self-employed individuals, those working seasonal jobs and those who don’t engage in traditional banking.

“PayNearMe offers our customers another way to easily and securely make their child support payments in cash,” said Jeff Grissom, Director of the County of San Diego’s Department of Child Support Services. “I am confident they will find PayNearMe and MoneyGram cash payment options easy and convenient to utilize when making their child support payments.”

Since January, more than $2.4 million has been collected in 9,000 cash payment transactions with MoneyGram across the state. (Find MoneyGram service locations) PayNearMe services are available at the following 7-Eleven locations. Both services charge a $1.99 fee and payments could take three days to post.

“Supporting their children is the responsibility of every parent. Making it easier and more convenient for parents is our responsibility,” said Alisha Griffin, Director of the California Department of Child Support Services. “Now with the two cash pay services in retail stores throughout the state, we are helping even more customers where they live and work.”

Cash payments are also accepted in person at some local child support offices. Payments using a credit card, check or money order can also be made online, by phone and by mail. Fees are not charged to make these payments. Visit the California Department of Child Support Services or call (866) 901-3212 for all payment options.
