With less than three weeks to go, the Registrar of Voters (ROV) is appealing to Chinese and Vietnamese bilingual residents and asking them to help at local poll sites on Nov. 19 for the San Diego City mayor’s race.
“The ROV has more than 2,200 volunteers who have committed to serve their community at the polls this year, but we still have an urgent need for 50 more Chinese bilingual and 30 more Vietnamese bilingual poll workers,” said Registrar Michael Vu. “Our bilingual volunteers help citizens who are not yet proficient in English to vote at the polls.”
Chinese and Vietnamese new poll worker orientation training classes are offered. Bilingual poll worker volunteers can earn a stipend of $90 to $110. All poll worker volunteers must be U.S. citizens, a registered voter in California, and able to read and write the English language.

The Special Municipal Election will fill the vacancy left after the elected mayor resigned. Mail ballot voting and early voting is already taking place, and 572 polling places will be set up early Tuesday, Nov. 19 in neighborhoods. Voting will take place on Election Day from 7 a.m. through 8 p.m. The City of San Diego has more than 675,000 registered voters.
